Position Details:

This is an internship opportunity for students interested in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Occupational Health, or related field.

This position is located in Gibbstown, NJ (480 S. Democrat Road, Gibbstown, NJ 08027).

We are interested in candidates who are available for part time hours during the school year (immediate), and full time hours during the summer. This position is M-F. Working hours are ‘to be determined’, depending on our candidate’s school schedule/availability. Working hours will need to be between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.

Position Overview:

The EH&S Intern will provide entry-level support on various safety projects and responsibilities. This individual will assist to prevent injury/illness by proactively managing risk and promoting a culture that expects and supports a safe, healthy workplace. This position requires a safety or chemical background, hard work, dedication, and the motivation to learn. Work is performed under the general direction of the EH&S team, as well as collaboratively with other departments such as Operations, Warehouse, HR, and Quality Assurance/Regulatory.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Utilize resources to determine hazard levels of on-site chemicals and maintain appropriate records.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and provide information to necessary parties.
  • Assist in SDS (Safety Data Sheet) Improvement and Management.
  • Assist in spill containment, cleanup, and reporting requirements in conjunction with operations and EH&S teams.
  • Learn key procedures and perform regular audits of procedure application (including but not limited to: Try, Lock, Tag & Try (T,L,T & T), Confined Space, Safe & Hot Work Permits, Line Break & equipment Isolation, Fall Protection, PPE).
  • Track and analyze EHS performance data (injury rates, incident reporting, etc.) and contribute to team for process improvement.
  • Assist in the development of EHS training and technical documentation regarding EHS procedures.
  • Hazardous waste coordination.
  • Participate in risk assessments and update records, in order to maintain accurate records.
  • Provides administrative assistance to personnel and performs light office duties as needed.
  • Supports the development, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of Environmental. Health and Safety programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, as well as local regulatory requirements.
  • Support future EHS initiatives (toolbox talks/training/posters/visitor programs).
  • Perform research as requested.
  • Other duties/tasks as needed/requested by Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in the field of Safety or Environmental Science.
  • Ability to learn and understand chemical properties and their associated hazards, including proper labeling and storage requirements.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, as well as independently.
  • Ability to learn quickly.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient computer skills, with proficiency in MS office.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to learn regulations and reporting requirements under OSHA, EPA, NJDEP, BATF, DOT, CAA, NFPA.
  • Previous background in Safety and Environmental Science a plus.
  • Previous SDS experience a plus.

Education/Certifications:

  • Currently in the process of pursuing a college degree in an Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Occupational Health, Chemistry, or related field.

Physical Demands and Environment

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Physical Demands:

    Employee is required to walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; bend; kneel and climb. The employee must regularly lift and move up to 15 pounds, frequently lift/move up 25 to pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. In addition, employee must be able to occasionally maneuver and move 30 to 55-gallon drums or up to 450 pounds utilizing proper drum material handling equipment and/or the proper techniques.

  • Work Environment:

    This position requires one to work both in an office environment and manufacturing facility. There is a moderate level of heat, cold, dust, dirt and fumes. Employee frequently works near moving mechanical equipment and chemicals. Employee will be exposed to varying temperatures.
